This essay has identified three historical periods of discourses on the concept of sustainability, from which the essay proposes three sets of ideas embedded in that concept: inter- and intra-generational equity, stability, and solidarity. The case of a national health insurance system has illustrated the policy implications of this normative framework. Now that we have deconstructed the concept of sustainability and clarified to what we have committed, we need to step back and re-evaluate our purpose: Why do we, as a body politic, commit to sustainability in the first place? Why do we impose the idea of sustainability as a collective obligation upon ourselves?
